Description
John Mayo worked between 1721 and 1730 in London. He apprenticed under maker John Pickfatt. The turned 7” removable barrel features a flared cannon muzzle and attractive bands. Barrel is fitted with a lug for barrel removal with barrel wrench. The bottom of the breech is engraved “LONDON” and deeply stamped with private London view and proof marks, along with maker’s cartouche “IM” for John Mayo.
There is also a decorative tombstone engraved around bottom of breech. Top of barrel inscribed “JOHN MAYO” with the same tombstone engraving surrounding the name. Lock mechanism scalloped and engraved at back and all components have tooled borders. Walnut grip profusely inlaid with silver wire scroll work and accented with silver pins. Relief-carved shell design surround the barrel tang.
The sterling silver furniture includes a pierced sideplate, symmetrical wrist escutcheon with chased mask at the top and a grotesque mask pommel cap. Very good condition, overall. Some marks from use, markings excellent throughout. Grip shows some marks and has a couple minor slivers of inlay absent, but all inlay is secure. Silver polished. A very attractive and more ornate example than those typically encountered.
