Description
This extremely rare and unusual arm follows the basic form of the 1766 Infantry Musket but reduced length and slender stock. The wood is a nice striped walnut with a comb that curves slightly to the right for better fit. Only one other similar weapon is known to exist and Didier Bianchi’s definitive book on French small arms does not even have a picture, only a description of the unique barrel band combination.
The round barrel has top mounted bayonet stud and no markings. 1766 Model flat lock with beveled edge, faceted and bridled pan, marked Charleville and a Star over D forward of ring cock, which indicates 1768 modification. D on left side of comb along with large, but faint “X”, initials NF lightly carved on right of comb along with another faint “X”. All three barrel bands have springs indicating 1768 modification and since 1768 lock plate indicates prior to1771. The top and bottom barrel band are gilt brass, while the center band is iron with bell shaped swivel, which indicates a Captain’s fusil.
CONDITION: A museum quality weapon in original flintlock configuration. The lock is strong and holds a both full and half cock. The iron parts have a light grey patina and no sign of rust. The stock is complete with what appears to be original finish, no cracks and limited handling marks
See Bianchi, Didier. French Military Small Arms Volume 1 Flintlock Long Arms page 36 for description of officer’s muskets with white barrels for Lieutenants and Captans weapons having a brown barrel and gold/brass colored barrel bands. Iron rammer with button head appears original.
